What invisible text actually does on Steam

Steam treats zero-width and braille blank characters as real characters in the persona name, profile summary, and showcase titles. They pass the empty-field check, but each one counts against the 32-character persona limit. The persona name is what friends and opponents see in CS2, Dota 2, Rust, and every other Steam game — it is not the same as your account login (which is permanent) or your SteamID (which is numeric). The custom URL field is the hard exception: it accepts letters, digits, and a small set of symbols only, so invisible characters get stripped there. Profile summaries give you around 5,000 characters, based on player reports. This page hands you the same characters we tested in each Steam field.

How to paste invisible text into Steam

1
Copy a character
Tap any character above. The braille blank (U+2800) is the safest default for Steam — it survives the persona name renderer more reliably than zero-width space.
2
Open Edit Profile
Open Steam, click your profile name in the top right, then Edit Profile. Paste into the Persona Name field, the profile summary, or a showcase title.
3
Paste and save
Long-press or Ctrl-V into the field, then click Save. The text disappears from view, but Steam still counts it as content and the field passes the empty check.

What invisible text is actually useful for on Steam

💬
Blank persona name
Paste an invisible character into the 32-character persona field and your name shows up blank in friends lists, lobbies, and in-game scoreboards across every Steam game.
📝
Profile summary line breaks
The summary box has no paragraph-break button for inline formatting. Invisible characters give you a manual line break.
🎭
Showcase title styling
Showcase titles accept Unicode. Invisible characters let you align text across multiple showcase boxes.
🔒
Group chat formatting
Drop invisible characters into Steam group chats and DMs to push text onto a new line.

Where on Steam you can use it

💬
Persona name
Make your display name look blank in friends lists and in CS2, Dota 2, Rust, and other Steam games. Each invisible character counts toward the 32-character cap.
📝
Profile summary
Use invisible characters to push text onto a new line inside the roughly 5,000-character summary box.
🎭
Showcase titles
Pad short showcase titles so they align with neighboring boxes on your Steam profile.
🔒
Group chats and DMs
Break chat messages across lines without spending visible characters.

Field-by-field behavior on Steam

Steam counts characters in UTF-16 code units, not visible glyphs. Most invisible characters cost one unit, but Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts cost two units per character — which is why a 32-character limit effectively shrinks to around 18 for Cyrillic persona names, based on player reports. The persona name accepts Unicode freely, including zero-width and braille blanks. The custom URL is the hard exception: it accepts letters, digits, and a small set of symbols only, and invisible characters get stripped on save. Vanity URL changes are also capped at one per 30 days, separate from the persona name (which you can change unlimited times). The profile summary gives you around 5,000 characters. Rendering can vary between the desktop client, the web, and the mobile app.

Practical notes before you paste

Braille blank (U+2800) survives Steam's persona name renderer more reliably than zero-width space (U+200B).

Every invisible character counts toward the 32-character persona limit. Stack ten and you've spent nearly a third of your budget.

Invisible characters do not work in the custom URL field — it accepts letters, digits, and a few symbols only.

Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts cost two UTF-16 units per character. A 32-character limit shrinks to around 18 for Cyrillic names.

You can change your persona name unlimited times. The custom URL on Steam is capped at one change per 30 days.

Don't confuse the persona name with your account login. The login is permanent; only the persona changes.

Test on a second device after saving. The web client and the desktop app render some Unicode differently.

Profile summaries give you around 5,000 characters. You will not run out.

Common questions about invisible text on Steam

Steam compatibility, by field

The persona name (32 characters), profile summary (~5,000), showcase titles (~100 each), group names, and chat all accept invisible Unicode characters on Steam. The custom URL field is the hard exception — it accepts letters, digits, and a small set of symbols only, so invisible characters get stripped on save. Steam counts characters as UTF-16 code units, which is why Cyrillic and other non-Latin scripts effectively shrink the 32-character persona limit to around 18. Rendering can vary between the desktop client, the web, and the mobile app; braille blank (U+2800) is the most consistently invisible across the surfaces we checked.

Copy a character and try it

Pick braille blank if you're not sure, paste it into your Steam persona name or profile summary, and see how it renders on your client.
